National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The Space Shuttle was a partially-reusable spacecraft operated by the U.S. Except for one final mission to repair the Hubble Space Telescope, subsequent shuttle missions were flown only to the ISS to allow the crew to use it as a haven if damage to the orbiter prevented safe reentry. NASA made several technical and organizational changes to subsequent missions, including adding a thorough on-orbit inspection to determine how well the shuttle's thermal protection system (TPS) had endured the ascent, and keeping a designated rescue mission ready in case irreparable damage was found. Construction of the International Space Station (ISS) was put on hold the station relied entirely on the Russian Roscosmos State Space Corporation for resupply for 29 months until Shuttle flights resumed with STS-114 and for crew rotation for 41 months until STS-121. Īfter the disaster, Space Shuttle flight operations were suspended for more than two years, as they had been after the Challenger disaster. When Columbia reentered the atmosphere of Earth, the damage allowed hot atmospheric gases to penetrate the heat shield and destroy the internal wing structure, which caused the orbiter to become unstable and break apart. Before reentry, NASA managers had limited the investigation, reasoning that the crew could not have fixed the problem if it had been confirmed. Similar foam shedding had occurred during previous Space Shuttle launches, causing damage that ranged from minor to nearly catastrophic, : 121 but some engineers suspected that the damage to Columbia was more serious. The disaster was the last of two fatal accidents in the Space Shuttle program, after the 1986 breakup of Challenger soon after liftoff.ĭuring the STS-107 launch, a piece of the insulative foam broke off from the Space Shuttle external tank and struck the thermal protection system tiles on the orbiter's left wing. The Space Shuttle Columbia disaster was a fatal incident in the United States space program that occurred on February 1, 2003, when the Space Shuttle Columbia ( OV-102) disintegrated as it reentered the atmosphere, killing all seven crew members.

I'm working on a better layout to show the two packages side by side.īut for now I'm just putting the dplyr code in a comment above each python call. We'll work through the introductory dplyr vignette to analyze some flight data. Whether you're an R user looking to switch to pandas (or the other way around), I hope this guide will help ease the transition. Remember to (install and) load the tidyverse package first. The comparison is just on syntax (verbage), not performance. The R code below contains an example to capitalize the first letter of each column name. This package provides many tools to process strings, e.g., the str_replace_all() function to remove blanks in column names. The str_to_title() function is part of the stringr package. By providing the str_to_title() function as its argument, the rename_with() function converts the first letter of each column name to uppercase. The rename_with() function changes column names. However, it is recommended to use the tidyverse package instead (which both contains stringr and dplyr). These functions are part of the stringr package and the dplyr package, respectively. In R, the easiest way to capitalize the first letter of a column name is by using the str_to_title() function and the rename_with() function. However, how do you capitalize only the first letter of a column name? So far, we demonstrated how to convert column names to lower-/uppercase. How to Capitalize the First Letter of a Column Name? funs = toupper)Īs the example shows, the rename_at() function allows both column positions or column names to define for which columns to change their case. Remember, before you can use the rename_all() or rename_at() function, you need to (install and) load the dplyr package. Alternatively, the rename_at() function (de)capitalizes only explicitly specified columns based on either their name or position.īelow, we provide 4 examples of how to change the case of column names with dplyr. You convert the case of all column names with dplyr by using the functions rename_all() and tolower() (for lowercase) or toupper() (for uppercase). But, how do you convert column names to lower- or uppercase with dplyr? The tools this package provides are extremely powerful and easy to understand. Many R programmers use the dplyr (or tidyverse) package for data preparation. How to Change the Case of Column Names with dplyr? Alternatively, the vector might also contain the names of the vector. The code above uses a vector to define the columns to be transformed based on their positions (i.e., 1 and 3). In this code, we capitalize only the first column and the third column name. Next, the names() function and the toupper() function convert the column names to uppercase. The vector defines which columns to capitalize, whereas the square brackets filter those columns. Rather than changing the case of all column names, R can also capitalize some variable names.īesides the functions names() and toupper(), you need a vector and the square brackets to convert some column names to uppercase. Moreover, this function is more versatile than the toupper() function as it can also be used to transform column names to lowercase. Instead of using the toupper() function, the casefold() function converts characters to uppercase, too. You can specify the column names either by their names or their positions.įor example, below we convert only the names of the second column and third column to lowercase. The vector and brackets are used to specify and select the column names, respectively. The easiest way to change the case of some specific column names in an R data frame is by using a vector and the square bracket notation. However, it is also possible to transform the case of just some columns. Convert Some Column Names to LowercaseĪbove, we converted all column names to lowercase. In this article, we discuss the casefold() function in more detail. An advantage of this function is versatility, it can transform letters to both lower- and uppercase. Instead of using the tolower() function, it is also possible to convert the case of column names to lowercase with the little-known casefold() function. Overall, your typical 'mage' with a floaty ball of death (that shoots magical beams. You also get some mild 'control' powers later on. Very lackluster class untill mid/higher level. That would be considered an 'unorthadox' build, but whatever fits your playstyle I say. Generally these are the only two stats people put into for the class, but some will put into oora for the starting physical attack (which is very spammable). Which will increase your spell damage / heals slightly.Ĭonjurer: Main dps spellcaster class. Its pretty straight forward, however some go Windu/Pyra for +int increase. You will have the damage boost from windu and defense from Erda. Most builds are Windu/Erda for backup tank. Not the best at anything, but always there to 'fill in the gaps' of a team. Shaman: I can't say much about the shaman aside from this They are the backups. There is one more 'interesting' build and that is using Oora to increase your STR for your starting skill which is based off physical damage. But again, its up to you! A very fun class. I would personally choose the +3 int which will buff you ACROSS THE BOARD insted of adding 2.5hp onto my heal (which really isn't even noticable). But really, every 10 levels it only adds +2.5 hp to your heal. Some people like to go with Windu thinking it will buff their heal. Unda is your main affiliation, so pyra is used to suppliment it with +3 int per level. For a main dps/healer build the most common is Unda/Pyra. But in my opinon, the 'best' build is whatever fits your play style. There are several different builds for Mystic and an ongoing arguement over the 'best'. The mystic main affiliation stat is Unda, which will increase your health by +20 every point. Although less base defense than a dragoon would have, this can be increased with items anyway. I would actually go so far to say that mystics can be tanks too. Their heal is very weak untill late game, but they make up for it with damage and beefiness. I honeslty have never seen a healer class like this. Mystic: The mystic is an odd 'healer' class. Pyra will increase your strength +3 every point, which suppliments your Erda +1 str + 1 def and affiliation damage boost. This is all up to the player of course! The most common DPS build would be Pyra/Erda. Windu would give you a little more dodge. Although Unda will add quite a nice chunk of hp by later levels, it could be substituted thanks to their HP buffs. Dragoons get lots of health buffs later on (and even starting at lvl 12). However, lately it has been suggested to me Windu/Erda. Erda increases strength and defense every level, not to mention beefing up all of your attacks (even your starting skill, based off physical damage as it increases your str). Unda increases your health by 20 every level. The most common TANK build would be unda/erda. It all depends on your affiliation! Erda is the main affiliation of the dragoon skills. But what is the purpose of a dragoon? That all depends on how you build it! You could go for DPS or you could go for a TANK. First, lets cover the available classes, their strong points, weak points and main roles in Ether Saga!ĭragoon: The dragoon is your sterio-typical chinese warrior, complete with a spear (that has little feathers on it Oo) and your jackie chan karate sounds. Pull together a section of hair as you would normally, however, before you divide it into three parts, pin the folded scarf under the section of hair. To begin, fold your scarf in half (this is one of those times when an oblong version might work best). But you can also weave your accessory through a more complicated ’do, like a French or fishtail braid. There are multiple ways to incorporate a scarf into a braid and the easiest is simply to pull your hair back into a ponytail, tie one end to the elastic and then use it as one third of your braid, tying the other end off with a second elastic or by wrapping and knotting the scarf itself. A cute cotton scarf on your way to brunch every once in a while is not going to cause any major damage. You can also try to wear headscarves sparingly. If you don’t want to compromise your locs, you can simply braid your hair before accessorizing with a headscarf. Non-silk scarves, on the other hand, tend to suck out the moisture out of your hair, leaving your tresses dry and fragile. Though silk and satin scarves can be a pain to deal with when it comes to getting them to sit nice and secure on your head, the major upside is that they don’t actually cause a lot of wreckage to your hair. How to prevent damage from wearing a headscarf Silk and satin fabrics are great for protecting your tresses as well, but while they’re aesthetically pleasing these bad boys tend to slip off, which can be a bit annoying. Fabrics such as cotton or lightweight wools are some of the best because they stay secure. Depending on the style you’re going for, you also want a scarf made of fabric that’s going to stay on your head while still being stylish and washable. In particular, you’ll probably want to use a rectangular style if you like the look of excess fabric hanging down, or if you’re interested in doing a full headwrap or turban. Rectangular head scarves-aka oblong or long scarves-are not quite as multipurpose as their perfectly square cousins, but they do offer other benefits. If you want it to cover all or most of your head, it should be at least 28 by 28 inches. Square headscarves are the easiest to work with for the greatest variety of hairdos but make sure you’ve selected a scarf that’s big enough for your chosen style. There are two shapes you can choose from: square headscarves or rectangular headscarves. The type of headscarf you choose will depend on your needs, of course, but there are several key factors in selecting a headscarf: RELATED: 11 Protective Hairstyles for Natural Hair That Are Trending in 2022 How to choose a headscarf Whatever look you’re going for, we’ve gathered together the best tips and tricks for achieving the headscarf style you want. The benefit of this particular hair accessory is how versatile it can be: There are tons of different looks you can achieve with just one scarf, ranging from super-simple to intricately detailed. The headscarf is hardly a new trend, but it is a fun way to shake up your use of the cold-weather accessory (though we suggest sticking to silk or other thin fabrics rather than wrapping a cozy wool number around your scalp). Whether you’re trying to hide a bad hair day, hoping to protect your strands from wind or rain or you’re just bored and looking to try a new ’do, a headscarf can help. It’s dirty, frizzy or simply seems to have developed a new cowlick that you just can’t be bothered to deal with. Some days your hair feels gorgeous, clean and beautiful enough to star in a hair-care campaign. Because none of us want to die alone, and that’s basically our biggest fear.” “That’s our human existential crisis looking back at us. “The idea of this lonely whale swimming out through the ocean, that’s like our mirror,” he says. In turn, that moniker has given 52’s story enduring appeal to those it resonates with, including Zeman. This, in part, is how 52 has earned his nickname as the world’s loneliest whale. While 52’s sex is still technically unconfirmed, singing is overwhelmingly the remit of male whales-possibly used as seduction, communication, or both-making it extremely likely that 52 is, in fact, a male.īecause of his unusual singing, some researchers hypothesize that 52 may have been unable to connect effectively with other whales at all, perhaps spending his long life alone and isolated. The majority of other fin and blue whales in the Pacific Ocean sing at approximately 10 to 20 hertz, meaning that 52’s vocalizations are at best peculiar, or at worst unintelligible, to the rest of his species. That’s just above the lowest register available when playing the tuba, and slightly higher than the deepest note on a double bass. The 52-Hertz whale, or just plain 52, is so-called because of his higher-than-average singing voice, recorded at (you guessed it) 52 hertz. | The Loneliest Whale Who is the Loneliest Whale? “I never would have had that experience or those emotional thoughts if it wasn’t for talking about a whale.” Joshua Zeman became “obsessed” with finding 52-Hertz, aka the world’s loneliest whale. It’s not necessarily just me and you talking, it’s me and you talking about a whale that suddenly makes you and I that much more connected,” he adds. “I connected with so many people on such a deeper level.” “I never would have guessed that making a film about a whale would have made me a better human being,” Zeman says laughing, when asked if looking for the whale really did help him work through his breakup. But for The Loneliest Whale, he worked simultaneously as writer, director, producer, narrator, and co-star, in order to document what became an intense passion project. “I think we’re all so caught up in our lives that we don’t go on quests anymore.”Īn American producer and director, Zeman is best known for his work on 2004’s Mysterious Skin and 2009’s Cropsey. “The film is about a quest,” explains Zeman. Something about the whale’s story resonated with him, and Zeman says that from the very first moment he learned about 52, he was “immediately moved.”Īs he dug deeper, he began what he describes as an “Ahabian,” decade-long study of the elusive animal, culminating in the upcoming documentary The Loneliest Whale: The Search For 52 (2021), which is co-produced by actor and environmentalist Leonardo DiCaprio. Nevertheless, this offering also draws a number of relevant and pertinent parallels between the human condition and that of the lonely whale and its kindreds, metaphorical parables that we had all better heed if we hope to save the whales - and ourselves.Joshua Zeman’s obsession with “52,” the so-called loneliest whale in the world, began during a particularly difficult breakup. The film generally tells the tale in a beautifully filmed and engaging vehicle, though it has unfortunate tendencies to slip off into tangents that are awkwardly introduced and to insert annoying, somewhat self-aggrandizing observations from the director/narrator, intrusions that needlessly impede the flow of the narrative. This has thus led to the emergence of a mythology sentimentally celebrated in story and even song, all backed by an abundance of empathy for this loner of the deep, a creature that has come to be known as "the loneliest whale." The search for this elusive cetacean provides the focus of filmmaker Joshua Zeman's captivating new documentary, which shares the story of this solitary specimen and the long-shot expedition launched to find it. Such is the case for a believed-hybrid whale that sings its songs on a unique frequency, making it fundamentally unable to communicate with its peers and causing it to labeled as the ultimate social outcast. So, when we hear about an individual who is unable to fulfill that requirement, we're often saddened by this deficiency, regardless of whether this circumstance involves a human or some other creature. It's a nice visual style and coupled with the hundreds of powers you can use (each with an attractive special effect attached), creates what is easily one of the better-looking Xbox titles to date. Even your character - who battles in gritty, realistic environments - looks like an anime character, with slightly oversized hands and an expressive, almost cartoonish face. The story throughout is like an anime waiting to happen. The voiced dialogue (of which there is surprisingly little) and the text dialogue have been translated without any strange malapropisms. Here, your character (whom you can name) runs around talking to different NPCs, following subplots as each character searches for the truth to their past, and engaging in the constant battles on the surface in hopes of researching the strange phenomenon that has overtaken Earth. The story of the single-player Scenario Mode takes place mostly in the underground headquarters of the human resistance group known as the Visions. Phantom Dust's story is pretty much your standard anime plotline, complete with troubled friends, betrayals, and the ability to create large-scale destruction wherever you go. Your goal throughout the story mode (which will take you 8-12 hours to complete, depending on your skill) is to uncover your past (as you and your fellow bunker-mates are amnesiacs) and find a way to return to the surface for good. Dust Story Set in a science-fantasy world where humans have been forced to live underground due to dangerous levels of mysterious dust on the surface, Phantom Dust offers an anime-style take on the online fighting genre. Metallica appeared second and played ten songs at the sold-out show at New York City's Roseland Ballroom on August 3, 1984. Metallica rehearsed the album's material at Mercyful Fate's practice room in Copenhagen. Rasmussen listened to Metallica's tapes before the members arrived and thought the band had great potential. Rasmussen, who had not heard of Metallica, agreed to work on the album, even though his studio employees questioned the band's talent. Drummer Lars Ulrich chose Rasmussen, because he liked his work on Rainbow's Difficult to Cure (1981) and was keen to record in Europe. The album was produced by Flemming Rasmussen, the founder of Sweet Silence Studios. Metallica started recording on February 20, 1984, at Sweet Silence Studios in Copenhagen, Denmark. Hetfield gradually built confidence as lead vocalist and kept his original role. Frontman James Hetfield felt uneasy about performing double duty on vocals and rhythm guitar, so the band offered the job to Armored Saint singer John Bush, who turned down the offer because Armored Saint was doing well at the time. When not gigging, the band stayed in a rented house in El Cerrito, California, called the Metallica Mansion. An incident occurred when part of Metallica's gear was stolen in Boston, and Anthrax lent Metallica some of its equipment to complete the remaining dates. Because the band had little money, its members often ate one meal a day and stayed at fans' homes while playing at clubs across the United States. After finishing its promotional tour, Metallica began composing new material, and from September, began performing the songs that were to make up Ride the Lightning at concerts. The album helped to establish thrash metal, a heavy metal subgenre defined by its brisk riffs and intense percussion. Metallica released its debut album, Kill 'Em All, on the independent label Megaforce Records on July 25, 1983. Many rock publications have ranked Ride the Lightning on their best album lists, saying it had a lasting impact on the genre. It was certified 6× platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in 2012 for shipping six million copies in the United States. Although 75,000 copies were initially pressed for the American market, the album sold half a million by November 1987. Ride the Lightning peaked at number 100 on the Billboard 200 with no radio exposure. Two months after its release, Elektra Records signed Metallica to a multi-year deal and reissued the album. The band performed at major music festivals such as Monsters of Rock and Day on the Green later that year. Metallica promoted the album on the Bang That Head That Doesn't Bang European tour in late 1984, and on its North American leg in the first half of 1985. Ride the Lightning received a positive response from music critics, who saw it as a more ambitious effort than its predecessor. It is the last album to feature songwriting contributions from former lead guitarist Dave Mustaine, and the first to feature contributions from successor Kirk Hammett. The overall recording costs were paid by Metallica's European label Music for Nations because Megaforce was unable to cover it. Beyond the fast tempos of its debut Kill 'Em All, Metallica broadened its approach by employing acoustic guitars, extended instrumentals, and more complex harmonies. Bassist Cliff Burton introduced the basics of music theory to the band and had more input in the songwriting. The title was taken from a passage in Stephen King's novel The Stand, in which a character uses the phrase to refer to execution by electric chair.Īlthough rooted in the thrash metal genre, the album showcased the band's musical growth and lyrical sophistication. The artwork, based on a concept by the band, depicts an electric chair being struck by lightning flowing from the band logo. The album was recorded in three weeks with producer Flemming Rasmussen at Sweet Silence Studios in Copenhagen, Denmark. Ride the Lightning is the second studio album by American heavy metal band Metallica, released on July 27, 1984, by the independent record label Megaforce Records. So, we went through countless iterations, mixing up the process and engaging in fermentation experimentation techniques. But we weren’t willing to just water down an IPA and call it a day. “Calories and carbs contribute a lot to the things we like in food and beer. “We knew that making a vibrant, full-bodied IPA that’s this low in calories, carbs and alcohol was going to be a huge challenge,” explained Jeremy Moynier, Stone Brewing Senior Manager of Brewing & Innovation. What gives? Brewers are answering a growing demand for beers that fit a healthy lifestyle, but they're doing it on their own terms.
